FD Closed-Card Surrendered
Why was my FD closed or my credit card surrendered?
Let’s help you understand why this might have happened and how you can keep your card active and secure going forward.
First, why does this happen?
As per RBI guidelines, banks are required to take certain actions when a credit card isn’t used or activated properly. If your card or FD was deactivated, one of these common reasons may apply:
1. PIN not set within 37 days
Forgot to set your card PIN? Here’s what happens
When you receive your Niyo SBM Credit Card, it’s important to set your PIN within 37 days from the date the card was issued. This is a security step to activate your card and start using it.
What if you miss the deadline?
If you don’t set the PIN within 37 days, here’s what happens:
- Your credit card will be automatically cancelled (surrendered).
- The FD (Fixed Deposit) linked to the card will be closed.
- The FD amount will be transferred back to your Niyo SBM Savings Account.
So, don’t worry. Your money is safe.
But the card itself will no longer be active or usable.
Want a new credit card?
If your card was surrendered because you missed the PIN setup deadline, you can still get a new one! All you need to do is:
- Create a new FD through the Niyo app
- Order a new credit card
Important notes:
- Ordering a new card after the first one has been surrendered may involve additional charges.
- Why? This is a security rule to ensure only the rightful user activates and uses the card.
What to do:
As soon as your card arrives:
- Set your 4-digit PIN in the app
- Activate your card immediately
2. Bill not paid for 60 days
If your credit card bill isn’t paid for 60 days after the due date, your FD is automatically closed to recover:
- Outstanding bill amount
- Interest charges
- Any late fees
Why?
Since this is a secured card backed by your FD, the bank uses your FD to settle unpaid dues and transfer remaining funds to your SBM savings account.
What to do:
Pay at least the minimum amount due by the due date every month
Tip: You can view your bills and due dates directly in the Niyo app.
3. No card activity for 365 days
If you don’t use your card for 12 months, the card is considered inactive and must be surrendered as per RBI rules.
Why?
Inactive cards pose security risks and are subject to deactivation by SBM Bank.
What to do:
- Make at least one small transaction (even ₹1) every few months
- It can be a refundable wallet top-up, online payment, or a POS swipe
Tip: Set a calendar reminder every 3–6 months to use your card.
Simple steps to keep your card active
Here’s how to make sure your card and FD stay safe and operational:
- Activate your card and set the PIN within 37 days
- Pay your bills on time (before the due date)
- Use the card at least once a year
- Check transactions and due dates in the app regularly
